Bearing Material: Altitudinal and Azimuthal

For altitudinal bearings I used Teflon on the rocker box and ebony star on the trunnions. I suspect I could have gone with something cheaper than ebony star. I used the laminate only on 3/4 the circumference of the trunnion-disc. I used wood glue; and to hold everything in place as the glue dried, a thick, long rubber band.

On the ground board I used Teflon and, since the disks of ebony star really are outrageously expensive, an old LP dug up in the basement … I searched for Holst’s Planets or Mozart’s Jupiter symphony in vain. As it happened to be Holy Week, I settled on Rossini’s Stabat Mater. That it was performed with the Vienna Staatsoper and Akademiechor had an appeal, also for reasons unrelated to astronomy.
